Life on the Road: Touring the UK as a Musician

Touring the UK as a musician is a whirlwind of soundchecks, service stations, and standing ovations. Over the past two months, I’ve had the privilege of traveling the country with none other than John Barrowman, playing to packed-out theatres and experiencing the highs (and occasional chaotic lows) of life on the road.

Each city brings its own charm—Manchester’s buzzing crowds, Edinburgh’s breathtaking scenery, Cardiff’s unwavering warmth. The routine is relentless but exhilarating: early morning travel, quick hotel check-ins, a soundcheck that sometimes turns into an impromptu comedy hour, and then the moment that makes it all worthwhile—the show. There’s nothing quite like the energy of a live audience, each night offering something new and unexpected.

Of course, touring isn’t all glamour. You develop a deep (and slightly unhealthy) relationship with motorway service station snacks, and your suitcase becomes a chaotic mix of crumpled shirts and half-eaten protein bars. Sleep is a luxury, and finding a decent cup of coffee can feel like a life mission. But the camaraderie, the inside jokes, and the sheer joy of making music live every night make it all worth it.

And then there are the post-show moments—the debrief over a late-night drink, the messages from audience members who’ve been moved by the music, the sense of accomplishment as another standing ovation rings through the venue. Touring isn’t just about the performances; it’s about the people, the places, and the stories that come from it.

As this leg of the tour comes to an end, I’m reminded why I do this. The thrill of performing, the bonds forged on the road, and the magic of bringing music to audiences night after night—it’s an experience like no other. Until the next adventure, UK, you’ve been incredible.
